Dynamic vocalist Voula Karahaliou has mastered the various styles
encompassed in the world of Greek music. Her talent, experience, and passion
for music have made her the most recognizable and requested female Greek
singer in Chicago.
As a girl growing up in the suburbs of Athens, Voula began singing at family gatherings around the kitchen table. Her family’s roots began in the Greek regions of Asia Minor when her grandparents immigrated to Greek Macedonia during the great exchange of populations between Greece and Turkey in the 1920's.
While just a teenager, Voula began singing with groups of other young musicians in recitals throughout Greece and across Europe. Her professional career soon began in a modest taverna on the island of Cyprus. From there she spent time singing in Athens, England, and the United States. She eventually returned to Greece and joined the musical group Athinaiki Kompania. For the next seven years, Voula performed with the ensemble, enjoying a great deal of success. At the height of their fame, they appeared on Greek television at least twice a week. Shortly thereafter, Voula embarked on a vibrant solo career, and later emigrated to the United States with her new husband. To date, she has recorded eight albums, including two gold and one platinum.
Voula’s desire to sing originates from a sincere wish to express her feelings and emotions through music. Everyone who hears her sing experiences the passion, intensity, and soulfulness of her performance. In short, Voula sings for the pure enjoyment of her art, and looks forward to the music of each celebration.
